Privacy policy
Last updated: October 11, 2026
Night Window has no accounts and no ads, and does not sell data. Most of what the app does happens on your iPhone. This page lists everything that leaves it.
Your location
Night Window uses your location to work out where objects are in your sky. Your precise position, your saved observing locations, your horizon scans and the places where you often open the app are stored only on your iPhone.
An approximate location leaves the phone in two cases, and never your precise position:
- Weather. To get the cloud forecast, the app sends your coordinates to Open-Meteo, rounded to about 1 km first.
- Place name. To show the name of your town, the app sends an approximate location, also rounded to about 1 km, to Apple's location service. Apple handles this under its privacy policy.
As with any internet request, Open-Meteo and Apple also see your device's IP address when the app contacts them.
Camera
The camera is used only while you scan your horizon, so you can line up trees and rooftops in the viewfinder. The app shows the live preview and reads the phone's angle. It does not take or save photos, and no images leave the phone.
Darkroom
Images you open in the Darkroom are processed entirely on your iPhone. They are never uploaded. The app keeps a copy of the image you last opened, and of images you export, in its own storage on the phone. Images you save go to your Photos library or wherever you choose to share them.
Usage analytics
Night Window uses PostHog to count how features are used, so we can tell what to improve. The app sends events such as "opened the sky map", "generated a plan" or "exported an image", with details like the telescope model you picked, the names of sky objects you open or add to a plan, counts, how long an image took to process, the image format, and at which step an image failed to open or save.
Events never include your coordinates, your name, your email or anything you type. PostHog identifies your install with a random anonymous ID created on the phone.
The PostHog software also adds technical details to each event: app version, iOS version, device model, language and region setting, time zone and screen size.
No location is collected for analytics. Night Window tells PostHog not to work out a location from your connection, and our PostHog project discards IP addresses instead of storing them.
You can turn analytics off at any time in Settings, under Privacy, with "Share anonymous usage data". When it is off, the app sends no analytics events at all.
Stored on your iPhone
Your settings, favorites, saved locations, horizon scans, session plans and Darkroom settings are stored on your iPhone. Deleting the app deletes them.
Changes
If what the app collects changes, this page will change first, and the date at the top will be updated.
